This collection of Phrases are inspired by one simple isohedral tile, from a group of crystallographic tiles that can be arranged by their periodic discrete pattern.

As the original tile shape is from a crystallographic group the Phrases appearance is like crystal growth.

The structure of each Phrase is enhanced by light, cavity and mass. This is not a computer generated object.

The 2D tile was drawn by hand onto a block of modelling board and the 3d shape extruded out from the flat by cutting the board vertically around the tile. The flat plain of the extrudtions.

Placed on a pattern board with interchangeable core boxes 16 different variations of the original element were cast. With over 80 cast elements polished and finished on the work bench I selected one in each hand to rotate and interlock together in a visually pleasing way. Secured with a spot weld, another element would be selected, rotated and interlocked.

Sometimes the Phrases were instantly successful, others needed to be dismantled and reworked more succinctly. Cast Aluminium, Powder Coated White.
